Information on Meridia

Meridia is an appetite suppressant that is used in conjunction with an overall diet plan and routine exercise to reduce weight.

Meridia (Sibutramine), is an alternative to Phentermine. It works by affecting appetite control centers in the brain. Sibutramine (Meridia) is the only appetite suppressant / diet pill medication approved for longer-term use in significantly obese patients although the safety and effectiveness have not been established for use beyond one year.

USES: This medication is a diet aid used with a reduced calorie diet to promote and maintain weight loss. Used primarily to reduce excess body weight (obesity).

HOW TO TAKE MERIDIA: Best taken in the morning on an empty stomach 1 hour before breakfast. Break, crush or chew before swallowing. Store in a tightly closed container at room temperature away from sunlight. Since Meridia can cause sleeplessness avoid taking after noon. Take as directed by your doctor and do not take longer than directed. This drug can become habit forming. Also, if you take Meridia for a long period of time do not stop taking without your doctors approval. Over time this medication may not work as well as it did at the beginning. Consult your doctor if your weight increases. Keep out of the reach of children and do not give your medication to anyone.

SIDE EFFECTS: Dry mouth, sleeplessness, irritability, back pain, stomach upset or constipation may occur the first few days as you body adjusts to the medication. CONTACT your doctor as soon as possible if you experience; rash, hives, seizures, worsening of vision, decreased amount of urine or unusual bleeding or bruising. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience the following side effects or symptoms of toxicity; excitement, restlessness, loss of consciousness, confusion, agitation, weakness, shivering, clumsiness or unsteadiness, fast heartbeat, large-unchanging pupils, vomiting, trouble breathing, shortness of breath, chest pains, swelling of feet/ankles or legs, fainting, disorientation, depression, high fever, eye pain, tremor or increased sweating. If you notice effects other than those mentioned above that are out of the ordinary, consult your doctor..

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your complete medical history especially if you have high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid, glaucoma, diabetic or emotional problems. Consult with your doctor if you think you are pregnant, do not breast feed if you are taking this medicine. This medication will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. If you have trouble sleeping ask your doctor when is the best time to take this medication. DO NOT exceed the recommended dose. This drug is not recommended for use by children. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for further information.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Inform your physician about ALL the medicines you use, (prescription and nonprescription), especially if you take high blood pressure medicines or MAO inhibitors, (eg., Furazolidone, Phenelzine, Selegiline, Tranylcpromine) or any other weight loss medicine. Avoid "stimulant" drugs that may increase your heart rate such as decongestants or caffeine. Decongestants are commonly found in over the counter cough and cold medicines.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, do not double the next dose. Instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual schedule.
